Canada Graduate Scholarships - CIHR Doctoral Program

The Canada Graduate Scholarships - CIHR Doctoral (CGS D) Program supports high-calibre students engaged in doctoral programs in all academic disciplines. This support allows scholars to fully concentrate on their doctoral studies, to seek out the best research mentors in their chosen fields and contribute to the Canadian research ecosystem during and beyond the tenure of their awards.

Description
  • Approximately 180 awards allocated annually.
  • The maximum amount per award is $35,000 per year for up to three (3) years. Award funding is allocated as follows:
    • Stipend: $30,000 per annum
    • Research Allowance: $5,000 per annum
Eligibility

To be eligible to apply, an applicant must:

  • be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada, as of the application deadline date;
  • have completed no more than 24 months of full-time study in their doctoral program by December 31 of the year of application (no more than 36 months if transferred directly from Bachelors to a PhD or enrolled in a joint program, e.g., MD/PhD, MA/PhD);
  • submit only one doctoral award application in a given academic year. Nominations to the Vanier CGS program do not count towards this limit;
  • not have already received a doctoral-level scholarship or fellowship from CIHR, NSERC or SSHRC.
Selection Criteria
  • Research ability and potential (50%):
  • Relevant experience and achievements obtained within and beyond academia (50%).

General application process

  • Applications must be prepared, finalized and submitted by applicants using ResearchNet.
  • Any information that exceeds the page/character limits, or is not required, will be removed from the application prior to peer review.
  • Applicants must preview all components of their application to ensure its completeness.
  • Applicants who wish to self-declare as an Indigenous applicant may do so by communicating directly with the Program Coordinator at banting-vanier@uottawa.ca
  • Applications must be submitted by October 17, 2019 at 5:00 p.m. which is the University of Ottawa’s internal deadline.

Important dates
  • October 17, 2019, at 5:00 p.m.: Internal application deadline.
  • November 21, 2019: Final application deadline to national competition.
  • April 2020: Release of results.
