The University of Ottawa research community applauds the federal government’s decision to re-instate the mandatory long-form census as announced Thursday by the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development, and the Honourable Jean-Yves Duclos, Minister of Families, Children and Social Development.

Sound research is predicated on methodological rigor and reliable data. The mandatory long-form questionnaire ‎provides critical input for research in the social sciences that cannot be obtained otherwise. Such research forms the basis of evidence based decision making.

Restoring the mandatory nature of the census will provide more accurate information with respect to all communities. The extent and quality of the data collected will enable scientists and decision makers to understand socio-economic dynamics, predict societal needs and develop appropriate recommendations and course of action.
