Future University of Ottawa leaders in their fields have received over $1.9 million in Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships and Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships.
Guillaume Fontaine, a postdoctoral fellow at the Faculty of Medicine and the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute, received an award of $70,000 a year for two years to continue his contribution to the growth of science in Canada. His research looks at the implementation of high-quality care to fight hepatitis C in injection drug users. As well, 12 doctoral candidates from five faculties received awards of up to $50,000 a year for three years to fund their outstanding work in the humanities, natural sciences, engineering and health sciences.
The varied research topics range from the consequences of global warming for wild bees to automizing a microscopic tool to assess damage to critical concrete infrastructure to a study of violence as a strategy to control crime.
“Congratulations to our award recipients, whose impressive research is raising the University of Ottawa’s profile,” said Sylvain Charbonneau, vice-president, research. “Supported by experienced mentors, they will continue their brilliant work in their fields of research thanks to this funding.”
