Tasks and responsibilities: Data organization (for instance, using Dropbox to store census data, media sources, notices, charitable website overviews and reports) and providing services related to organizational information management, such as writing, editing, publishing, information dissemination, advertising and event planning

Artificial Intelligence (AI) Applied to the Development of New Materials for the Capture of NOx, H2S and SO2

Disciplines: Heterogeneous catalysis, functional materials and coding/artificial intelligence

Tasks and responsibilities: Reviewing scientific literature, collecting and evaluating data and analysis methods, developing and managing a database, using MATLAB and Python, applying AI methods and preparing experimental validation protocols

CFD Simulation of Flow around Hydraulic Structures Using OpenFOAM

Disciplines: Environmental hydraulics, water, environment and energy

Tasks and responsibilities: Literature review, mesh generation, model setup, simulation and report

Phishducation Research Tool Development

Disciplines: Writing software and analytical software tools

Duration: Fall 2020 and Winter 2021

Tasks and responsibilities: Completing the design and coding implementation in Python and MySQL of the “Phishducation” tool. Testing with a limited set of human users and refining the algorithms being used to manage learning progress. Prototype and user testing, followed by re-design, with a reasonably diverse set of users.

Eligibility:

  • Master’s or PhD
  • Knowledge of coding in Python or with database-related analysis tools
  • Experience or interest in qualitative research or with UX/software performance testing (an asset)
  • Strong data-analysis skills

Global Sexual and Reproductive Health Research

Disciplines: Social sciences, public health, sexual and reproductive health issues

Tasks and responsibilities: Conducting background research and literature reviews, developing and distributing recruitment materials, transcribing interviews and contributing to data analysis

Motion Variability for Patient with Total Hip and Knee Replacement during Daily Tasks of Living

Title of project: Motion Variability for Patient with Total Hip and Knee Replacement during Daily Tasks of Living

Disciplines: Biomechanics of human movement, musculoskeletal modelling and orthopedic biomechanics

Duration: Fall 2020 and Winter 2021

Tasks and responsibilities:  Development of a MATLAB tool for joint kinematics consisting of a series of functional scripts/programs that read and process datasets for motion analysis during walking, squatting and stair-climbing trials for healthy participants and patients that have undergone total knee or hip replacement. Design in GUI format and implementation of inertial measurement units (IMU) for use during motion analysis protocols, taking into account workplace safety, feasibility, reliability, ergonomics and cost-effectiveness.

Patient Virtual Support Technology for Geriatric Hip Fracture Patients (PATH4HIP)

Disciplines: Orthopaedic surgery and rehabilitation

Duration: Fall 2020 and Winter 2021

Tasks and responsibilities: Participate in team meetings to learn about the study approach, conduct literature reviews, conduct data analyses, gain experience with quantitative and qualitative data analysis methods and help draft manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals.

Eligibility:

  • Master’s or PhD
  • Preference for students with research experience

Understanding the Structure-Function Relationship of Membrane Proteins in Lipid Metabolism

Disciplines: Protein biochemistry, bioinformatics and structural biology

Duration: Fall 2020 and Winter 2021

Tasks and responsibilities: Using the online tools to analyze published protein data and learn to develop new strategies for wet-lab experiments.

Eligibility:

  • Bachelor’s, Master’s or PhD
  • Preferred background in molecular biology, structural biology, biochemistry,  biophysics or  organic chemistry, with well-developed analytical skills
  • Strong written and spoken English
