How to participate

Applications are submitted jointly by a student and a professor.

  • Interested students may identify and contact potential faculty sponsors in a field of the student’s choice. Professors and students do not have to be in the same faculty.
  • Students can contact more than one professor, but only one application per student can be submitted each academic year. A professor can submit up to four applications per academic year.
  • Interested professors interview students and together they agree, if applicable, on the research project to be submitted for UROP funding.  Applications are submitted jointly by a student and a professor.


The UROP is open to students of all undergraduate faculties and programs who meet the criteria outlined below.

Students registered in the Faculty of Law, the Faculty of Education or a CO-OP program should also consult the eligibility criteria specific to the unit they belong to.*

Students must:

  • Have a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of at least 7.5 (Students transferring from another institution who do not have a University of Ottawa CGPA must have an admission average to their program of 75%)
  • Be registered full time in an undergraduate program at the University of Ottawa (Exchange students are not eligible)
  • Be in the second or third year of their program of study when they are applying for the award (They must have completed a minimum of 24 and a maximum of 80 credits)
  • Have never received a UROP award
  • Have never completed a Master’s degree or its equivalent

* In addition to the above, the following criteria apply:

  • Students registered in a CO-OP program are eligible for UROP. To be considered to be in third year, a student must not have completed more than 80 credits, excluding placement credits. In addition, a student cannot submit an application to UROP with any professor the student has worked for during a CO-OP research placement or during any other occasions. It is also recommended that CO-OP students do not take additional courses during the CO-OP placement they do while pursuing UROP.
  • Students registered in an undergraduate program in the Faculty of Law must have a minimum CGPA of 6.0 to be eligible. They can participate during the first or second year of their program.
  • Students registered full time in the two-years full-time BEd program (teacher education) at the Faculty of Education are eligible for UROP during the two years of the BEd program. 


Only full-time regular University of Ottawa faculty members may be UROP faculty sponsors. UROP is not open to replacement, visiting, adjunct or part-time professors.

Application process

To submit an application, just make a request in the Online Scholarships and Bursaries portal via uOzone. The student is responsible to submit all required documents (collaboration agreement, student’s statement of purpose and description of the research project) and to attach them to the request. The online request will be available starting tbd in uOzone. Only complete applications are accepted.

Only one application per student can be submitted each academic year. A professor can submit up to four applications per academic year.

Description of the research project (to be written by the faculty sponsor)

Please provide the information listed below, addressing each item in a separate paragraph. All information should fit on one page, 1.5-spaced, 12 point font. Applications with descriptions longer than one page will be rejected.

  • Present the research question or working hypothesis given to the student. Explain its relevance and define the objectives associated with it.
  • Describe the approaches and methods the student will use.
  • Describe projected learning activities specifying the skills/abilities to be developed by each.
  • Explain how the 50 hours of learning activities is to be divided and how the student is to be supervised.
  • Explain how your participation in UROP will enrich your own experience as a professor-researcher.

Student’s statement of purpose (to be written by the student)

The student’s statement of purpose must explain why he or she wants to participate in UROP, in this specific research project, and the program’s connection with his or her professional goals. It should specify how UROP can help the student attain his or her academic or career goals. Maximum length: one page, 1.5-spaced, 12 point font. Applications with statements longer than one page will be rejected.

There will be only one UROP competition for the 2017-2018 academic year. The program will start in November and take place throughout the academic year.

Selection criteria

Two internal selection committees (one for social sciences and humanities and one for pure and applied science) study the applications and choose the recipients. Selection criteria include the following:  

A – Research project

  • Clarity, coherence and pertinence of the research question or working hypothesis, and its objectives
  • Compatibility of the research question or working hypothesis with the approaches and methods to be used
  • Relevance of the learning activities in regards to the skills/abilities to be developed by these activities
  • Feasibility of the planned activities in the context of UROP
  • Understanding of UROP objectives

B – Statement of purpose

  • Quality of writing and consistency between UROP participation and professional goals
How to find a faculty sponsor
  • Interested students must make an appointment with the professor of their choice.
    • It is strongly recommended to bring an up-to-date CV and a copy (unofficial) of your transcript to the meeting.
  • If you do not know professors in your field of interest, you may consult the lists of teaching staff on the academic unit websites.
  • Most professors have also a personal web page which provides details on their fields of research and specialization.
  • Eligible professors normally have one of these titles: assistant, associate or full professor. If you are unsure about the eligibility of a professor, please feel free to ask.
