Research Associate / Scientist / Medicine / Engineer (1) - NR 5

Purpose:

Under general supervision, plans and executes non-routine assignments of varying complexity requiring deep knowledge of related engineering or scientific theory, principles and practices.

Typical tasks and duties:

  • Designs experimental programs and experiments. Selects and uses appropriate procedures, equipment and standards to produce required data.
  • Performs complex laboratory experiments and assists in data evaluation, interpretation and preparation. Sets up experiments.
  • Compiles and analyzes data and performs computations using image analysis software, spreadsheets, graphing and curve fitting software.
  • May be responsible for a single independent research project.
  • Trains new laboratory personnel, students and collaborators.

Knowledge, skills, education and experience: 

  • Recent PhD (preferred) or a minimum of master’s degree plus relevant working experience.
  • Strong organizational, analytical and tech/scientific oral/writing skills.
  • Ability to coordinate workflow.
  • Sound judgement in applying scientific principles and predicting or preventing problems.
  • Ability to adapt protocols as needed (within guidelines), and to work with computers (perform mathematical calculations).
Research Associate / Scientist / Medicine / Engineer (2) - NR 6

Purpose:

Works at senior level. Independently plans and executes non-routine assignments of varying complexity requiring deep knowledge of related engineering or scientific theory, principles and practices.

Typical tasks and duties:

  • Evaluates data and prepares technical reports, including recommendations based upon findings. Selects and uses appropriate procedures, equipment and standards to produce required data; assists in interpretation.
  • Performs repairs, calibration, installation, troubleshooting, assembly, design, testing and/or modification of specialized apparatus and equipment such as mass spectrometers, gas chromatographs, oscilloscopes, electron microscopes, electro-hydraulic controls, servomechanisms and computer interfacing.
  • Provides technical assistance to students and academic staff.
  • Sets up and gives lab demonstrations as necessary, occasionally explaining to students the relationship between the practical and theoretical. Assists in developing lab programs, as necessary.
  • Makes analog and digital hardware and provides software services, as necessary.

Knowledge, skills, education and experience:

  • PhD (preferred) or a minimum of master’s degree plus 3-5 years of relevant experience (some roles may require more extensive experience in a particular field, procedure, technique or piece of equipment).
  • Strong organizational, analytical and technical or scientific oral and writing skills.
  • Ability to coordinate workflow.
  • Sound judgement in applying scientific principles and predicting or preventing problems.

Research Associate / Scientist / Medicine /Engineer (3) - NR 7

Purpose:

Works at senior level in a specialized field. Under general direction, independently conducts and coordinates complex projects. Devises new procedures requiring an understanding of associated technical fields in engineering or the sciences.

Typical tasks and duties:

  • Translates product specifications in designing test procedures and standards (This activity is characterized by its independence and non-routine nature, variety and complexity). Must usually study research material (technical and scientific publications) to ensure feasibility of approach. Usually prepares authoritative reports.
  • Modifies or designs and constructs complex apparatus or equipment.
  • May provide high-level technical advice on purchase of apparatus, overall design implications, material use, etc.
  • May develop or modify lab programs.
  • May supervise working level technicians. May interview applicants and recommend hiring and dismissals.
  • Writes detailed instructions on custom built or on modified equipment.
  • Ensures electronic and electrical equipment and apparatus meet all necessary safety standards and requirements.
  • May supervise and perform quantitative and qualitative analysis for professors and students.
  • Recommends product or process change to improve system performance.

Knowledge, skills, education and experience:

  • PhD in a relevant discipline or MSc with several years (5-7) of job-related work experience (Some roles require more extensive experience or training in a particular area of research, procedure, technique, or equipment.).
  • Sound judgement in applying scientific principles and predicting/preventing problems.
  • Organizational, problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Judgement in choosing best protocol/adapting procedures to meet changing needs.
  • Computer skills to aid in research, analysis and data presentation.
  • Interpersonal, technical, scientific and communications skills (written/oral).

 

Senior Research Associate / Scientist / Medicine / Engineer - NR 8

Purpose:

Works at senior level. Is responsible for overseeing lab operations for portfolios of ongoing research projects and/or major research projects. Independently conducts and coordinates complex projects. Devises new procedures and experimental techniques requiring an understanding of associated technical fields in engineering or the sciences.

Typical tasks and duties:

  • Designs and implements research programs.
  • Leads a team of researchers and students to achieve research objectives.
  • Oversees the setting up and running of planned experiments, ensuring that experiments are appropriately supervised and supported.
  • Ensures that results are recorded, analyzed and disseminated in a timely fashion.
  • Manages research grants in accordance with university and sponsor requirements.
  • Seeks new research opportunities and leads or participates in the development of new projects and proposals.

Knowledge, skills, education and experience:

  • PhD in a relevant discipline and at least five years of practical experience as an independent researcher, or MSc with several years (5-7) of job-related work experience (Some roles require more extensive experience or training in a particular area of research, procedure, technique, or equipment).
  • Excellent organizational, leadership, problem-solving and analytical skills.
