Gregor von Bochmann of the School of Information Technology (SITE) has won the University of Ottawa Award for Excellence in Research in recognition of his pioneering research in software engineering and communication protocols.
"My research group works on methods for the development of communication protocols and distributed systems, on the use of formal methods for the analysis, design and implementation of communication protocols, and software development in general. Practical applications of these methods are pursued in relation with networking protocols, quality of service management for distributed multimedia applications, and distributed real-time control applications," says Prof. Bochmann.
Bochmann was the principal investigator on a $6.3 million financial award from the Canada Foundation for Innovation for SAVANT (Software engineering And Visualization for Applications in the Next-generation InterneT). The SAVANT project examines Internet applications and systems, which are among the fastest growing sectors in the world of information. SAVANT research is directly applied to the new information society and is expected to improve significantly our quality of life.
Collaboration with industry is an important aspect of Bochmann's research activities. He has directed the work on many research contracts with major Canadian companies in the telecommunications and computer fields, such as Nortel, IBM, Hewlett-Packard, Teleglobe, DMR and EICON Technologies. He has also been responsible for several larger inter-university and industry collaboration projects.
Bochmann has been a professor at the University of Ottawa since 1998, after working at the University of Montreal for 25 years. He received the 2001 Thomas W. Eadie Medal from the Royal Society of Canada in recognition of his contributions. Prof. von Bochmann was named a companion of the Royal Society of Canada in 1997. He received the George S. Glinski Award for Excellence in Research from the University of Ottawa's Faculty of Engineering in 2000.
