Technician

Junior Technician - NR 1

Purpose:

Performs basic and routine tasks, including general laboratory maintenance, routine cleaning and preventative maintenance of laboratory equipment and glassware. Under close supervision, provides general technical assistance and/or carries out routine tests using various types of equipment, and records results of analysis.

Typical tasks and duties:

  • Assists with general laboratory operation and maintenance including inventory, stocking supplies, cleaning and organizing labs.
  • Prepares media and performs other simple preparation tasks.
  • Washes and autoclaves glassware; prepares equipment and glassware.
  • Performs routine laboratory procedures as required.
  • Records test results but does not interpret beyond what is necessary to indicate the need for modifications in procedures. Notes unusual occurrences.
  • May collect samples for testing using a straightforward sampling procedure. Assists with routine data collection, sampling, identification, sorting and preparation tasks.
  • Maintains research-related records and databases, entering data according to established protocols. Refers complications or problems to technologist or technician.
  • May assist in setting up laboratories.
  • Carries out other related duties as required in keeping with the qualifications and requirements of the position.

Knowledge, skills, education and experience: 

  • High school diploma or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of standard maintenance techniques.
  • Minimum of experience in a related field.
  • Ability to understand and follow simple oral and written directions and to operate laboratory equipment.
Technician (1) - NR 2

Purpose:

Performs general laboratory techniques and provides testing services of limited or moderate complexity. Observes and records results and maintains optimal processing conditions. May engage in work of a repetitive nature for which on the-job training is usually provided. May be responsible for the daily operation and maintenance of the research laboratory and may perform related administrative duties.

Typical tasks and duties:

  • Under supervision, selects and conducts tests of simple or moderate complexity using standard procedures and established standards; uses judgment to obtain results.
  • Assists with conducting or running experiments or research work by performing assigned tasks, such as administering forms or questionnaires, recording and/or coding data or observations, and identifying and conducting routine sample tests using standardized techniques.
  • Performs simple preparation of materials according to test specifications.
  • Assists in analyzing and interpreting experiment results or research data by performing tasks such as assembly, compilation and summary of statistical and other data.
  • Operates, maintains and troubleshoots problems with standard research equipment.
  • Makes minor modifications of procedure within guidelines; records both requested results and observed anomalies.
  • Assists in modifying test procedures and equipment, and in testing and calibrating test equipment. Works according to a research or testing schedule.
  • Ensures sterilization of laboratory material, glassware washing and decontamination of biohazardous material and waste produced by laboratories.
  • Cleans and performs basic maintenance of equipment and apparatus.
  • Provides basic technical support and advice to users on good laboratory practices.
  • Orders and keeps inventory of supplies.
  • Ensures compliance with policies and safety standards.
  • Carries out other related duties as required in keeping with the qualifications and requirements of positions in this classification.

Knowledge, skills, education and experience:

  • High school diploma and sufficient technical training and relevant experience to have a basic understanding of the principles of the discipline applied in specific situations.
  • Knowledge of laboratory maintenance procedures, sterilization techniques, and regulations concerning decontamination and disposal of biohazardous material (as applicable).
  • Knowledge of and experience in safe laboratory practices.
  • Basic knowledge of lab equipment
  • One to two years of relevant experience in similar laboratory work an asset.
Technician (2) - NR 3

Purpose:

Performs varied and complex technical tasks requiring formal training, specialized knowledge and/or experience. Provides specialized lab management and/or testing services for professional staff or more senior technologists or technicians.

Typical tasks and duties:

  • Participates in designing, modifying and performing moderately complex experiments and systems. Uses technically advanced procedures and assists in conducting moderately complex analysis and interpretation; works with all procedures, equipment and standards, especially those which are somewhat or highly complex.
  • Conducts tests to produce data appropriate for the immediate needs of the professional requesting the tests; discusses procedures and results with professional.
  • Understands the basic purpose for tests in order to make appropriate observations, adjust testing procedures and note anomalies.
  • Develops and writes new protocols and safety procedures. Recommends modifications to test procedures, equipment and standards; contributes to development of new test procedures, equipment and standards.
  • Constructs, tests, repairs, calibrates and operates research, teaching and test equipment.
  • Troubleshoots and repairs moderately complex equipment and systems. Operates and maintains specialized equipment requiring extensive training.
  • Demonstrates standardized methods of operating equipment to faculty or students.
  • Conducts basic analysis using tools and techniques such as arithmetic and basic statistical calculations and tables.
  • Assists and advises on projects.
  • Is responsible for supplies and materials.
  • Maintains shop equipment.
  • Carries out other related duties as required in keeping with the qualifications and requirements of the position.

Knowledge, skills, education and experience:

  • University degree in a relevant discipline, or technical program and a minimum four years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Some positions may require a graduate degree.
  • Technical training and completion of apprenticeship program.
  • Sound understanding of the principles of the discipline as they are applied in practical situations and the purpose of the test results requested.
  • Knowledge of a variety of standard laboratory procedures and techniques, of laboratory equipment and terminology, and of laboratory hazards and safety practices.
  • Minimum work experience required.
  • Ability to operate and repair laboratory equipment.
Technician (3) - NR 4

Purpose:

Provides high technical and/or level administrative support to scientists, engineers and line operations, as well as maintenance in specialty areas including the operation, maintenance, diagnosis and repair of specialized research equipment or computational facilities. Assists in diagnosing and correcting technical problems.

Typical tasks and duties:

  • Develops new specialized techniques, test procedures and standards under general supervision of professional staff. Monitors safety and provides guidance on safe use of equipment.
  • Assists professional staff in diagnosing causes of system, equipment or material failure using advanced testing methods and equipment.
  • Performs background research and literature searches as needed, evaluates results and formulates recommendations as needed. Researches and determines whether new technology and systems can be applied to work.
  • Provides information and options for product or process modification to improve system performance or to better meet customer and other users’ needs.
  • Researches, designs and analyzes the results of new experiments. Selects and uses appropriate procedures, equipment and standards to produce required data; assists in analysis and interpretation.
  • Sets up, tests and calibrates testing equipment.
  • Assists in managing the daily operations and finances of a laboratory or technical operation for a department, including responsibility for budget, large purchase recommendations, inventory, forecasting and maintenance of financial reports, and staff administration.
  • Carries out other related duties as required in keeping with the qualifications and requirements of the position.

Knowledge, skills, education and experience:

  • University degree in a relevant discipline, or technical program and a minimum four years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience such as college diploma and at least 1-2 years of relevant experience
  • Graduate degree for some positions
Senior Technician - NR 6

Purpose:

Designs, applies and interprets a variety of complex analytical tests and research assignments according to specified experimental protocols, under general supervision. May be responsible for training and supervision of junior staff and/or general laboratory management. Performs highly skilled technical tasks requiring extensive education, training and experience. Is often considered an expert in the field and is expected to keep abreast of techniques and developments in the field independently.

Typical tasks and duties:

  • Translates product specifications in designing test procedures and standards.
  • Recommends product or process changes to improve system performance or to better meet customer or other user needs. Selects and uses appropriate procedures, equipment and standards to meet needs of staff.
  • Provides complex analysis of samples as part of a facility that provides an external service, using state of the art instruments with many cutting edge technologies.
  • Works with professional staff in diagnosing causes of system, equipment or material failure using advanced testing methods and equipment.
  • Acts as a consultant to external research facilities, to provide technical advice and/or complex analysis of research data, which may sometimes lead to joint authorship of scientific papers.
  • Collaborates with others, internally and externally, in developing new techniques and conducting joint experiments.
  • Supervises research projects of graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and visiting scientists that relate to own area of technical expertise, providing guidance on the design of experiments, the development and revision of research protocols and the interpretation and analysis of research.
  • Provides technical consultation, advice and instruction to faculty members, researchers and graduate and postdoctoral students on the appropriate use, selection and modification of specialized techniques in area of expertise.
  • Liaises with other technical experts and may be called upon to provide advice in own field of expertise.
  • Carries out other related duties as required in keeping with the qualifications and requirements of positions in this classification.

Knowledge, skills, education and experience:

  • University degree in relevant specialty and a minimum of six years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience (Some positions may require a graduate degree or more extensive experience in a particular field, procedure, technique or piece of equipment).
  • Sound understanding of the theories and principles of the discipline plus extensive experience in their application.
  • Ability to coordinate workflow and use personal judgement (troubleshooting) in applying scientific techniques (May be required to perform mathematical calculations).
  • Ability to handle dangerous materials, safely operate equipment, and prepare solutions and media.
